Whilst perusing the interwebs this evening, I stumbled across a headline entitled, “September 5 is International Bacon Day.” Naturally, I was intrigued.
What does one do on International Bacon Day, besides the obvious? Does one hang crisp-fried bacon strips from the mantel? Dress up in costume and go door-to-door, begging for smoky-cured pieces of fat? [...]

Haggis Not Scottish???

According to a Reuters news story released today, Historian Catherine Brown claims that haggis, the legendary and gag-inducing Scottish delicacy, is actually not Scottish but English.
Egads!
Haggis purists shouldn’t worry too much about the Scots’ patriotic claim on haggis getting snatched away; as former world champion haggis maker Robert Patrick insisted: “Nobody’s going to believe it.”
What’s [...]

Dateline Dusseldorf. A British con-man has been arrested for fooling dozens of Germans into buying potatoes when they believed they were buying iPods, as well as other electronic equipment.
Posing as down-on-thier-luck tourists trying to unload second-hand goods at bargain prices, the man and his accomplice sold the electronics in their carrying cases, only to surreptitiously switch the bags for ones filled with [...]

Soon, chocolate addicts with adventurous palates will have the opportunity to try the world’s first camel milk chocolate. My mom called me last night to tell me something kinda weird.
The people who are renting the house my grandparents used to live in (they both passed away last summer) are convinced that the house is haunted by them. So, they have hired a “ghostbuster” (her word, not mine) to see if it’s true. No one [...]

I’m a big fan of Mexican cuisine, but I don’t think I’ll be venturing south of the border to try this:
Escamoles are [...]

Hold on to your breakfast, kids.
A balut is a fertilized duck (or chicken) egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell. They are common, everyday food in some countries in Southeast Asia, such as in the Philippines, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Popularly believed to be an aphrodisiac and considered a [...]

The Italian government has outlawed the sale of Italy’s maggot-infested Casu Frazigu, commonly known as “rotten cheese,” because it can only be safely eaten for a few weeks in July in August. During the aging process, a fly called Piophila casei deposits its eggs on the cheese. When the maggots are born, they move throughout [...]

During the Middle Ages, lampreys were widely eaten by the upper classes throughout Europe, especially during fasting periods, since their taste is much meatier than that of most true fish. Especially in southwestern Europe (Portugal, Spain, and France), larger lampreys are still a highly prized delicacy.
Is it just me, or do these things look like [...]
